Enhanced Potty Training Tips for Your New Rescue Dog or Puppy

Given the seasonal closure of our puppy preschool...

We recognize that potty training can pose challenges for new rescue dog or puppy owners. To assist you, we've developed enhanced potty training tips to expedite your furry friend's learning process.

Potty training your new pup can be a breeze with these simple steps:

Establish a Routine:

  • Set a consistent schedule for feeding, walks, and bathroom breaks to establish a routine.

Positive Reinforcement:

  • Reward with treats immediately after outdoor potty AND upon entering home (right after) sitting, leash off, and paws wiped.

  • Celebrate their success, reinforcing the positive connection between good behavior and treats.

Designated Potty Area:

  • On a leash, stand still until they go potty, staying silent to avoid startling them.

  • Celebrate and reward with a treat after they finish, emphasizing the designated potty area.

Accident Cleanup:

  • Clean up indoor messes discreetly; avoid letting them see the process.

  • Use a potty pad to absorb scent or place waste on it.

  • Place soiled pad near "out" door or bells.

  • A spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 8 parts water and 2 drops of Dawn dish soap will kill any and all trace of smell and stain.

  • After cleaning, bring them to the newly soiled pad and celebrate with love and a treat and reward positively "good job".

Patience is Key:

  • Stay calm and avoid punishment if accidents occur. A calm demeanor helps them learn from positive experiences.
